Swoop Into This Chair!
A chair is a pretty straight forward object; you see one, you sit in it. However, over the years, ergonomists have been studying how we interact with furniture. That research revealed something interesting when it came to chairs: we don’t always just sit.
Sometimes we curl up, perch ourselves on the arms or stretch out, defying the limitations of its structure. That’s exactly what industrial designer Brian Kane observed as he observed how students interacted with furniture in public spaces at the California College of Art. He noticed that very few of them sat in what might be considered a traditional way. This observation inspired a versatile and fluid design response, which became the Swoop family of lounge furniture for Herman Miller.
The Swoop Chair has no hard edges or 90-degree angles. The arms curve into the “swooping” form to accommodate a variety of postures and positions: upright with a laptop at the ready, or reclined with a cup of coffee; legs crossed, feet up, or settled in. “People take one look at this chair and they automatically smile,” says Mitchell Cohen, Dealer Principal, Workspace Group (WSG). “The design of the chair itself challenges their notion of what furniture should look like; yet, when they sit in it, they’re sold!”
